EGR monitor detected exhaust gas flow is below expected rate during commanded EGR on test. When this code is triggered in a Honda, the engine control module (ECM) has detected an issue with the EGR System system.
To accurately diagnose the P0401 on your Honda, we recommend the BlueDriver Bluetooth scanner. It provides specific fix suggestions from a database of millions of confirmed repairs.

Check PriceThe PCM commanded the EGR valve open and then looked for the change in manifold pressure, or the DPFE reading, that exhaust flow should produce. It saw little or nothing, so it set P0401. Most of the time this is carbon rather than a dead valve: the passages that carry exhaust gas into the intake plug up over the years.
Can you keep driving? Drivable. The usual complaints are pinging under light load, a rough or hunting idle if the valve hangs open, and a failed emissions test on NOx. Left alone long enough, pinging under load is hard on pistons, but you have time to diagnose it properly rather than throw parts at it.
Each cause carries the one test that clears it or confirms it. Work down the list instead of buying parts.
Do these before you spend anything on parts. The whole sequence takes about an hour of hands-on time.
Doing it yourself: Gasket $5-$20. EGR valve $60-$250. Carb cleaner and picks under $20. Cleaning the passage with the intake still on the engine is a two-hour job on a good day.
Paying a shop: EGR valve replacement $200-$450 installed. Passage cleaning $150-$400. If the intake has to come off, expect $500-$1,000.
On most engines the valve is the expensive part and the passage is the actual fault. Test before you buy the valve.
You need bidirectional control, or at minimum live manifold pressure or DPFE data, so you can see whether commanding the valve changes anything. A code reader cannot open the valve for you.
See which scanners stream live dataThe EGR port on older four-cylinders is a service item. It plugs with carbon, and cleaning the port fixes the code far more often than replacing the valve.
Stop if the passages need the intake off, if the valve is buried under the manifold, or if pinging under load has become constant. Constant pinging is a compression and piston question, not a carbon question.
